Advice for a healthy lifestyle
Lead an active life and take exercise
A sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy. At the very least it is advisable to:
- Walk for half an hour a day
- Take regular exercise – this allows body cells to retain a certain level of oxygen which reduces stress and prevents heart disease as well as helping to maintain proper weight and bone density
- Do stretching exercises to maintain good flexibility
During your chiropractic treatment, your chiropractor will provide advice, where appropriate, on the type of exercise that you should do.
A Healthy balanced diet
While the benefits of maintaining a healthy body weight are well-known, it is important not to become obsessed with the issue of weight gain. It has been proven that the stress caused by worrying about our weight makes us more prone to gaining the pounds! The best approach is to follow a balanced and varied diet, drink lots of water, and exercise.
It is essential to reduce saturated fats, such as those found in red meat, all types of sausage, ready-made meals, and fried food.
Be careful with the amount of oil that you use. While olive oil is the best for your health, it also contains a lot of calories so you should have a maximum of only three tablespoons a day divided between all your meals. The norm in Spain is to consume double or triple that amount.
Limit intake of all foods and beverages high in calories, sugar, salt, fat and alcohol too.
Increase the amount of fruit and vegetables that you eat so that they make up one third of your daily calories.
Eat pulses, seeds and fish (which should be baked, steamed or grilled) at least twice a week.
Eat foods containing high levels of fiber.
Do not smoke
Tabaco slowly poisons the body and is extremely dangerous.
Check for the taking of unnecessary medication
Check your medication with your doctor. Often, out of habit rather than necessity, medication is prescribed for many years. Prescriptions are repeated without being regularly reviewed and adapted to the current needs of the patient.
Always seek advice from your doctor before taking any medication or self-medicating.
Take care of your mental and emotional health
Looking after your mental and emotional health is also the secret to enjoying a healthier life.
It is good to have a positive attitude. It is not easy to be positive in a very bad situation, but it is better to have an attitude that leaves you open to solutions rather than one which causes everything to seem hopeless leaving you no escape from depression.
The mind is very powerful. We tend to subconsciously use a predefined schema which has been etched into our minds, and we use this as a way to think.
Emotional intelligence is knowledge of how to understand and control your emotions. This means that you have to understand how you feel and acknowledge those feelings. If you need to get something out of your system or let off steam about someone, you should do so by going to a psychologist, a life coach, or a psychoanalyst.
In modern society, many people think it is not good to ask for help, but asking is the most natural way to get help.
Mental health is also helped by having a stable social and family life.
Keep your mind active and creative. Don’t limit yourself to a life of routine. During our childhood we know how to do this but by the time we reach adulthood we have lost this ability.
Creativity, imagination, hopes and dreams make connections in our brains and develop and maintain an open mind.
Help others and share. We are all human beings and by empathizing and relating to each other, we learn how best to live happily with others.
Have medical checkups and chiropractor check ups
In the same way that we have regular checkups to assess our overall health, it is also very advisable to check the spine as it is so closely connected to the nervous system and the whole organism of the human body.
The spine should be looked after from a very early age.
Do not wait for pain or any symptoms to appear before arranging a visit to your chiropractor. It is better to arrange a visit for prevention rather than cure.
